The Academic Support Program for Student Athletes’ Tutorial Program at North Carolina State University has received the maximum certification by the College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Certification Program (CRLA).   CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring at the college/adult level.

The association sets high standards related to the skills and training for committed individuals within certified programs and for programs to work towards successful tutoring practices.

One student athlete said, “The tutoring program here at NC State is not only a dependable source for learning, but an ideal part for a student athlete. My tutor my freshman year not only helped me academically, but gave me advice and guidance in my transition from prep school life to college life. Utilizing State’s resources such as the tutoring program has definitely given me the competitive edge in the classroom.”

“The mission of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes is to assist with the recruitment, retention, and graduation of NC State student-athletes.  Having our tutoring program receive this level of certification speaks to the commitment of the program to provide the best support possible to our student-athletes.  Since we began the certification process with CRLA and implemented the training program, I have seen the experience and quality of the tutoring staff increase.  Further, the retention of qualified tutors has also improved, ”  said Carrie Leger, Director of ASPSA.

“Having access to CRLA training in our program has really enhanced my effectiveness as a tutor and given me even more tools for helping the students excel. Hardly a session goes by where I don't use something I learned in a workshop, “ said a tutor who has completed Level 1 tutor certification and is working towards Level II status.

ASPSA continues to meet a nationally recognized standard for educational services in support of our student athletes. The undergraduate tutorial center on our campus is certified by the same association and we work hard at being consistent with what is offered to our students on campus.
